Dental Implants
The permanent replacement for missing, decayed or loose teethWhat are dental implants?
If you have one or more missing, damaged, or loose teeth, dental implants offer a permanent and natural-looking solution. Unlike dentures, implants are securely anchored to your jawbone, providing a strong, stable foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function just like natural ones.
At Dental Lounge in Llandaff, we help patients from across the city regain their confidence with high-quality dental implants.
Types of dental implants

implant
This is a good solution if you have one or two missing teeth or looking to replace one or two teeth that are in very poor condition.

implant
Multiple dental implants, if you have several missing teeth, this option uses a dental bridge to support several new teeth.

implant
This solution is worth considering if you have many missing teeth or no teeth at all. This replaces a full arch using just 4 dental implants.

Dentures are fitted on to dental implants to provide more stability, but the teeth remain removable like traditional dentures.

- Protects Adjacent Teeth
Unlike bridges, implants don’t require neighbouring teeth to be altered, helping you preserve your natural tooth structure.
- Supports Facial Structure
Implants stimulate the jawbone and help maintain facial volume, preventing the sunken look that can occur with missing teeth.
- Improves Daily Comfort With implants, you can eat, speak, and live more comfortably – no slipping dentures, sore gums, or food restrictions.
How do dental implants work?
If you’re considering dental implants, here’s what to expect from your journey with us at Dental Lounge Llandaff:

Initial consultation
At your first visit, we’ll assess the health of your teeth and gums, take digital scans, X-rays, and photographs, and review your medical history. We’ll explain the dental implant process in detail and answer any questions you may have. Healthy gums are essential for supporting implants, so a full assessment is a key first step.

Dental implant surgery
Once you’re ready to proceed, we’ll schedule your implant placement at our Cardiff practice.
You’ll be given a local anaesthetic to ensure a completely comfortable experience during the procedure.
The number of implants placed depends on your treatment plan. Each implant is gently positioned into the jawbone. A small connector, called an abutment, is attached, and a temporary crown may be placed to protect the area while healing begins.
Some mild soreness is normal after surgery, but this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol.

Healing & Osseointegration
The healing phase is crucial. Over the next 2 to 6 months, the implant will naturally fuse with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This creates a strong and secure foundation for your final restoration.
While your mouth heals, we’ll be designing your custom-made crown, carefully colour-matched to your natural teeth or the shade you’ve selected with your dentist.

Long-Term Maintenance
To protect your investment, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene.
- Brush twice a day
- Floss daily
- Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly
With the right care, your dental implants can last for many years.
Frequently Asked Questions about dental implants
Can anyone have dental implants?
Most adults with missing or severely damaged teeth are suitable candidates for dental implants. During your consultation, we’ll assess the health of your gums and ensure you have enough jawbone to support the implant. We’ll also review your medical history to ensure implant treatment is safe and suitable for you.
If you smoke, we strongly recommend quitting before undergoing implant surgery, as smoking significantly reduces the success rate of treatment. Certain medical conditions and medications may also impact your suitability, and these will be discussed during your assessment.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution and can last 20 to 30 years — or even a lifetime with proper care. Maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular dental check-ups, and avoiding smoking can all help extend the lifespan of your dental implants.
Are dental implants safe?
Yes – dental implants are a safe and well-established treatment for replacing missing teeth. They’ve been successfully used for over 30 years and have a high success rate, especially in patients with good general health.
Dental implants are typically made from titanium, a material known for its durability and excellent compatibility with the human body. As long as you’re in good health and maintain proper oral hygiene, dental implants pose very minimal risk.
